Bled and Bohinj: Two Alpine Lakes, One Night

Stay one night in Bled and spend the second day at Lake Bohinj - quieter, larger, with no development on its shoreline, in a glacial valley at the edge of Triglav National Park. October brings full autumn colour to both lakes without the summer visitor volume.

This itinerary covers both of the main lakes in the Julian Alps foothills in a single overnight, using Bled as the base for the first day and Bohinj as the destination for the second morning before returning to Ljubljana. The full Bled day trip guide covers the island church, Vintgar Gorge, and the castle in detail; this itinerary uses a half-day at Bled and reserves the second day for Bohinj.

Getting to Bled: Bus from Ljubljana Bus Station (Alpetour direct service), approximately 1 hour 20 minutes, €7.50 single. Buses run hourly.

October context: Both lakes are in autumn colour from mid-October. The Vintgar Gorge closes 31 October; Bohinj's walking trails and the Savica Waterfall are fully open throughout October. Visitor numbers at both lakes drop significantly in October compared to July and August.

Day One: Bled

Arrive at Bled late morning. The essentials at Lake Bled for a half-day:

Pletna to the island church: 20 minutes each way plus 30 minutes on the island. Worth prioritising before lunch while the morning light sits on the water. Approximately €18 return from the landing stages on the southern shore.

Kremšnita at Park Restaurant: the vanilla and cream pastry specific to Bled. Lunch.

Bled Promenade (Cesta svobode): the kilometre of lake frontage with mountain and castle views. Flat and appropriate for post-marathon legs.

Where to stay: Vila Bled - Tito's former presidential summer residence, now a hotel on the western shore. Extraordinary lake access, period interiors, expensive. Grand Hotel Toplice on the south shore is large, traditional, and centrally positioned. Hotel Jadran and Hotel Berc are solid mid-range options. Book directly and confirm October operation; smaller hotels may reduce staffing.

Day Two: Lake Bohinj

Bus from Bled to Bohinjska Bistrica (Alpetour): approximately 40 minutes, runs roughly hourly. A second bus from Bohinjska Bistrica to Ribčev Laz (the main Bohinj lakeside settlement) takes about 15 minutes. Total journey approximately 1 hour. Taxis from Bled to Ribčev Laz: approximately €25--30.

Lake Bohinj (Bohinjsko jezero): the largest lake entirely within Slovenia, 4.5km long and up to 1km wide. No private motor vehicles on the southern lakeside road. No hotels on the lake surface. The shoreline is a combination of gravel beach, pine forest, and meadow.

The lakeside walk from Ribčev Laz west to Stara Fužina and the boat landing at the western end covers approximately 6km on flat ground alongside the water. The Bohinj rowing boats (no permit required to hire) can be rented from the western end of the lake. The water is genuinely clear.

Savica Waterfall (Slap Savica): 4km west of the lake end, reachable by shuttle bus from the lake (seasonal) or on foot from the lake's western parking area. The waterfall drops 78 metres in two stages through a narrow canyon; the path from the car park to the viewing platform is approximately 700 metres with 60 metres of ascent on a good path. Entry approximately €3. The walk is achievable on post-marathon legs if taken slowly.

Vogel Cable Car: from the south shore, a cable car climbs to the Vogel ski area at 1,535 metres. The panoramic view of the Bohinj basin from the top is one of the best accessible mountain views in Slovenia. Entry approximately €18 return. The cable car runs year-round; in October the upper station has no snow but clear sightlines on good weather days.

Where to eat at Bohinj: Gostilna Rupa near Ribčev Laz serves traditional Slovenian food at sensible prices. Stara Fužina village, a fifteen-minute walk from the lake, has a small dairy museum and a cheese shop selling Bohinj mountain cheese.

Getting Back to Ljubljana

Bus from Ribčev Laz to Bohinjska Bistrica, then connection to Ljubljana. Total journey approximately 2 hours. Check schedules at the Bohinjska Bistrica station; afternoon buses run hourly. Alternatively, a taxi from Bohinj to Ljubljana costs approximately €60--70 and takes about 75 minutes direct.
