The Abidjan Marathon is a Sunday race, so the Monday is the day to see Grand-Bassam. UNESCO lists the Historic Town of Grand-Bassam for its colonial urban layout and its N'zima heritage. It is a day out and a separate journey from the race, so keep your Abidjan room and leave the luggage there.
November in Grand-Bassam: the coast is hot and humid, and a typical November brings a good deal of rain. Carry a light waterproof, a hat and water, and plan the walking for the cooler end of the morning.
Getting There
UNESCO gives no travel times. Ask your hotel for a driver and ask for a realistic journey time from your own address, since it varies with traffic. Agree the return pick-up and the price before you leave. Check any public transport schedule before you rely on it. A driver is the easier choice after a marathon.
The Walk
Pick a short section of the historic town and take a guide. A guide cuts the standing around and tells you which buildings are open, which matters because World Heritage status does not guarantee that you can go inside. Take the walk in two short stretches with a seat between them. The beach is close, but proximity is no evidence that the sea is safe for swimming, so stay out of the water unless a local operator tells you otherwise.
Lunch
Eat at a restaurant your driver or guide recommends and book a table somewhere with seating in the shade. Check what is open on a Monday.
Getting Home
Return to your Abidjan hotel by car and leave a buffer before any flight. Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport (ABJ) is the arrival point for most visitors, and a hotel transfer is the simplest way to reach it.
