Roman Baths, Georgian streets and enough indoor attractions for changeable October weather, though Bath's hills call for gentler walks on recovering legs.

After the Abingdon Marathon: Bath by Train

The Route: Abingdon → Oxford → Bath Spa Logistics: Bus or taxi from Abingdon to Oxford, then a direct GWR train to Bath Spa, journeys advertised from around 1 hour 14 minutes. Marathon Month: October Duration: 2 nights

Abingdon ──(bus/taxi)──> Oxford ──(1h 14min train)──> Bath Spa

Bath makes a strong two-night city break after the race, with enough indoor attractions to absorb a wet October day and a genuinely different architectural character from Oxfordshire's market towns. October in Bath: the city stays busy with visitors year-round, but without the peak summer crowds, and its Georgian streets and indoor sights hold up well regardless of weather.

Nights One and Two: Bath

The Roman Baths, one of the best-preserved Roman religious sites in northern Europe, sit at the centre of the city and are almost entirely indoors, a sensible choice for a day when legs would rather not be tested on hills. Bath Abbey, next door, adds a second, shorter indoor stop. The city's Georgian architecture, most famously the Royal Crescent and the Circus, is best seen on a gentle, flat walk along Royal Avenue and the adjoining Georgian streets rather than the steeper routes further from the centre; Bath is genuinely hilly in parts, and accommodation at the top of a hill is worth avoiding for anyone still feeling the marathon in their legs.

Where to stay: The Royal Crescent Hotel, set directly in the crescent itself, offers a central, largely flat approach from the main train station. The Francis Hotel, on Queen Square, sits similarly close to the level part of the city centre.

Where to eat: Sally Lunn's, one of the oldest houses in Bath, serves its own historic bun alongside a full menu in a genuinely atmospheric setting. The Scallop Shell, a well-regarded fish and chip restaurant near the centre, is a simpler, more casual option for an easy dinner.

Getting Home

Direct GWR trains run from Bath Spa back to Oxford, and onward from Oxford to most parts of the country; Bristol Airport, roughly 40 minutes from Bath by road, is a further option for runners flying out rather than travelling home by rail.
