After the Abingdon Marathon: Oxford Without Overdoing It

The Ashmolean Museum, the Covered Market and a short walk around Broad Street, kept deliberately light rather than a full college-and-museum circuit on tired legs.

After the Abingdon Marathon: Oxford Without Overdoing It

The Route: Abingdon → Oxford → Abingdon Logistics: A 15–20 minute bus or taxi journey; Abingdon has no railway station, so Oxford is reached by road rather than rail. Marathon Month: October Duration: Day trip

Abingdon ──(15-20 min bus/taxi)──> Oxford ──(15-20 min bus/taxi)──> Abingdon

Abingdon itself is a small market town with limited tourist infrastructure, and Oxford, a short bus or taxi ride north, is the obvious extension for the day after the race. October in Oxford: term has started, so the city carries its usual academic-year buzz rather than a quiet off-season feel, and the Ashmolean and Covered Market are both fully open on their normal schedules.

The Ashmolean Museum and the Covered Market

The Ashmolean Museum, Britain's oldest public museum, offers free admission and daily opening from 10am to 5pm, an easy indoor stop that asks little of legs still recovering from 42.2 km. A short walk away, the Covered Market, a historic indoor market of independent stalls, cafés and food stands, makes a natural lunch stop between museum visits, with plenty of seating and no need for a long walk to find it.

A gentle loop around Broad Street and the Radcliffe Camera, Oxford's most photographed building, rounds out the day without attempting a full college-and-museum circuit; the honey-coloured colleges are visible from the street without needing to book entry to any one of them.

Where to eat: The Covered Market itself has a wide spread of casual options suited to a low-effort lunch. For something more sit-down, the Turf Tavern, tucked down a narrow lane near New College, is a historic pub within easy walking distance of the central sights.

Getting Back

The return bus or taxi to Abingdon takes 15 to 20 minutes; Sunday and evening bus timetables should be checked in advance, since Abingdon's own bus links to Oxford run less frequently outside peak weekday hours.
