After the Abingdon Marathon: Woodstock and Blenheim Palace

Blenheim Palace works far better as a relaxed overnight than a same-day add-on tacked onto race day itself; the site rewards slow, unhurried time rather than a rushed circuit on legs that ran a marathon the previous morning. October at Blenheim: the grounds are in full autumn colour, and the site's Halloween programming does not begin until 22 October, so runners visiting on race weekend itself will find the palace in its standard, uncostumed state.

Blenheim Palace and Woodstock

Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Winston Churchill and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, combines a grand baroque interior with extensive formal gardens and parkland designed by Capability Brown. The grounds involve genuinely more walking than a city museum day, so this is better scheduled for the day after arrival rather than immediately on top of the marathon itself. Woodstock, the small town at the palace gates, is compact and walkable, with independent shops and pubs along its main street.

Where to stay: The Bear Hotel, a former coaching inn in the centre of Woodstock, puts a runner within walking distance of both the town and the palace gates. The Feathers Hotel, also central, offers a similar, slightly more boutique alternative.

Where to eat: The Kings Arms, in Woodstock town centre, serves a straightforward pub menu suited to an easy evening after a day at the palace. For something closer to the estate itself, Blenheim Palace's own on-site restaurants offer a convenient option without leaving the grounds.

Getting Home

The return journey from Woodstock runs back through Oxford, from where onward rail or road connections toward home or an airport can be picked up; Oxford's bus and coach links are considerably more frequent than any direct service from Woodstock itself.
