After the Accra International Marathon: Ada, Then the Central Coast

The Route: Accra → Ada Foah → Accra → Cape Coast → Elmina → Accra Logistics: The two halves run in opposite directions from Accra, so you pass back through the city on the second day. Book one driver for the whole trip and agree the route in advance. Marathon Month: October Duration: 4 nights

Accra ──(1 to 1.5 hours east)──> Ada Foah ──(1 to 1.5 hours)──> Accra ──(several hours west)──> Cape Coast ──> Elmina ──(several hours)──> Accra

This plan puts the easiest day first. Ada Foah costs your legs nothing, the Central Coast costs more, and the gap between them gives you a night in the city or a long lunch.

October on this route. Showers are possible on both coasts. Turtle watching at Ada runs from September to February, and the canopy walk at Kakum is better in a dry spell, so check the forecast before committing to it.

Getting there and back

Hire one car and driver for the whole trip, because arranging two transfers is cheaper and easier than negotiating each day. Leave Accra after the morning traffic on the first day. On the second day you drive back through Accra before heading west. The Foreign Office advises prearranged transport and care after dark.

Night one: Ada Foah

Spend the afternoon on the water. A tourism office lists an estuary and Azizakpe Island tour of about 1 hour 40 minutes, with coconut oil making, and a two-hour Crocodile Island tour through mangroves. Both are seated, which suits the day after the race. After dark a seasonal turtle-watching tour runs nightly from 9pm, listed at GHS 50. Sightings are described as increasingly rare, so treat it as a night on the beach.

Night two: Accra or on the road

Drive back to Accra on the second morning and use the afternoon to rest. If you want a gentle city stop, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and the National Museum of Ghana are both listed on the race page. Sleep in Accra or start west the next morning, depending on your legs.

Nights three and four: Cape Coast and Elmina

Cape Coast Castle began as a Portuguese trading post in the sixteenth century, took its present form under British rule from 1664 and was rebuilt in the 1760s and 1770s. Elmina Castle was built by the Portuguese in 1482 and is the oldest surviving European building in sub-Saharan Africa. Both were inscribed by UNESCO in 1979. Both were holding sites in the slave trade, and the tours go through dungeons and the gates to the sea. Spread them across two days so neither feels rushed.

Kakum National Park offers a 333 m canopy walkway on seven suspension bridges, up to 27 m above the forest floor. It opens 6am to 4pm. You need both hands on the ropes, so leave it until the third day of the loop, when your legs are better.

Where to stay and eat

At Ada Foah, choose from river-bank hotels and beach camps using the tourism office's accommodation map. On the Central Coast, Coconut Grove Beach Resort stands on the beach just west of Elmina and has a pool and beachside dining. Menus lean on fish.

Getting home

Leave the coast on the final morning and allow most of the day for the drive. Keep a night in Accra before an international flight.

Practical notes

  • Carry cedis in small notes, because cards are unreliable on the estuary islands.
  • Pack a waterproof, insect repellent and shoes with grip for the forest.
  • Check the Foreign Office advice for Ghana before you travel, including vaccination and malaria guidance.
