The Alexandria Marathon is announced for a Friday, so the two nights in Alexandria run from Friday to Sunday. Cairo follows on the Sunday, leaving a day for Giza and a short transfer to the airport.

November in Egypt: Alexandria averages about 14°C at night and 24°C by day. Cairo is warmer by day, and the Giza site is exposed with almost no shade, so bring a hat and water.

Nights One and Two: Alexandria

Spend Saturday at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which has been open to visitors on Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00, and a second day at the Citadel of Qaitbay or the Alexandria National Museum. Details are in the other Alexandria itineraries. Stay at the Steigenberger Cecil in the Raml Station area or the Four Seasons at San Stefano.

Night Three: Cairo

There is no verified timetable for the Alexandria to Cairo rail service in these notes, so check the Egyptian National Railways timetable or book a private driver, and allow for traffic at both ends. Choose a Cairo hotel near your airport transfer. The Giza pyramids are in the open desert with sand underfoot and plenty of slopes; a guided vehicle visit that limits walking is a sensible plan after a marathon. Check Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities information for current hours and tickets.

Current FCDO advice for Egypt covers regional restrictions, security and health, and should be read before you extend beyond Alexandria.

Getting Home

Take a taxi or hotel transfer to Cairo International Airport (CAI). Allow plenty of time for traffic and security.
