The Solway Marathon is run beside the western end of the Hadrian's Wall Path, and the rest of the Wall lies east of Carlisle. You do not have to walk it. The Tyne Valley railway runs along the same corridor, and a few well-chosen stops will tell you more than a week of blisters.
June in Hadrian's Wall Country is the summer season in the region's own guidance. The days are long and the exposed ground is often windy or wet, so plan for both. Seasonal buses between the central sites may not run in race week, so check dates.
Night One: Carlisle
A road transfer from Anthorn takes 35 to 50 minutes. Carlisle Station Hotel sits beside the railway station and keeps the luggage handling short. The cathedral opens on weekdays from 07:30 to 18:30, and has ramps or lifts, with uneven floors and stairs in the towers. Keep the day gentle.
Nights Two and Three: the Tyne Valley
Take Northern east from Carlisle and choose one base for two nights, such as Hexham or Haltwhistle, and stay put. A move costs half a day with bags and waiting, even when the train ride is short. From the base, pick two or three site visits and use a taxi for any awkward last leg. Do not turn it into a through-hike. Bus times and admission details for race week need checking, and luggage storage at stations is not guaranteed.
Getting to Newcastle Airport
Take Northern back to Newcastle Central, then the Metro to Newcastle Airport (NCL), which takes about 25 minutes. Check the first Metro of the day against your flight, and keep a taxi as a fallback if the timing is tight.
