The marathon is on a Sunday and the morning after is a Monday, which in a year when the race falls on 1 November is the 2 November public holiday of Finados. Many cultural venues in São Cristóvão normally open Tuesday to Sunday, so the sensible plan is to arrive on Monday for the square, which is public space, and keep the interiors for Tuesday.
November in São Cristóvão: The town is in the same dry-season window as Aracaju, with INMET's November normal of 38.3 mm of rain and a mean daily maximum of 29.8°C. Shade is thin in a stone-paved square at midday. A local festival, the FASC, was advertised for the second half of November in the most recent programme, so check whether its dates overlap your trip, as lodging could be harder to find.
Night One: São Cristóvão
São Cristóvão is a historic town about 23 km from Aracaju, and its main square, the Praça São Francisco, carries World Heritage status. The square is the main recovery asset. It is paved, open and level in the middle, and there is room to sit. Cobbles around the edges and steps into the buildings are the difficulty, so check an accessible route with the visitor office before you commit to going into any building.
Split the visit into two sessions: the square and one museum on the arrival afternoon, then a second short session the next morning. The municipal site lists the Museu de Arte Sacra open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:30 to 17:00, and the Casa das Culturas Populares from 09:00 to 17:00. Choose one of them, not both. Skip any hilltop viewpoint unless you have an easy way of getting up and down.
Rates and availability change, so ask the municipal tourism office, or an Aracaju operator, for a bookable room and a quote for the transfer. Budget for the transfer in both directions, and agree the return time before you leave Aracaju. Leave surplus luggage at your Aracaju hotel by prior arrangement.
Getting Home
Return to Aracaju the next day by the same private transfer and go on to Santa Maria airport (AJU). Allow a margin, since the road is shared with ordinary traffic and a hurried transfer is a poor ending to the trip. If you fly early, spend the last night in Atalaia instead.
