One local operator describes the canyon outing as a same-day trip of about 12 hours, with more than six hours on the road. Another quotes about four hours and 210 km each way. The figures differ, which is why a two-night version makes sense for a marathon runner. It turns a day of sitting in a vehicle into three short stages with a rest in between.
November in the interior: Sergipe's wet season peaks around May, and INMET's Aracaju normals show 38.3 mm in November against 226.9 mm in May. The interior is hotter than the coast, and a boat on open water offers little shade. Take a hat and a lot of water. Weather and navigation conditions decide whether a boat runs, so confirm the departure close to the date.
Night One: Canindé de São Francisco
Travel on the day after the marathon only if you are comfortable sitting for four hours, and ideally leave on the second day of your trip. The drive is on ordinary roads, and the operators' estimates are for ordinary conditions, not a guaranteed door-to-door time. Stop when your legs ask.
Check in on arrival and do very little. Ask the operator who runs the boat for current lodging options near the departure point, and confirm in writing where you will sleep and eat.
Night Two: The Canyon
On the second day take the confirmed boat outing. Ask about boarding steps, shade, toilets, optional bathing and luggage storage, and do not build the day around compulsory swimming or steep viewpoints. The boat should be the main activity.
Getting Home
Return to Aracaju on the third day. Road delays make a same-evening flight a poor assumption, so book the flight from Santa Maria airport (AJU) for the following day or leave a generous margin. If the weather cancels the boat, a flexible operator will allow a swap to another day, so ask about the cancellation terms before you pay.
