Asunción ◄──(coach, day five)───────────────────────────┘
Foz do Iguaçu is the long extension, and it needs to be treated as a trip and not as a Monday outing. The first day is for the coach and a quiet evening. The falls are the middle of the stay, and the last day is for packing and rest. Do not squeeze them into a same-day dash after the race.
August in Foz do Iguaçu: August is winter in southern Brazil. Days are usually mild, and mornings can be cool. Water flow over the falls varies from year to year, and weather or river conditions can change access, so check the park's notices before you go.
Getting There
Book a coach ticket from Asunción and check the departure time, the border crossing arrangements and the journey duration with the operator. Allow extra time at the border for passport control, and keep documents together in a day bag. Ask your hotel whether it can arrange a transfer from the terminal in Foz.
The Falls
The Brazilian national park lists entry on weekdays from 09:00 to 16:00 and at weekends from 08:30 to 16:00. Timed tickets include internal transport, and a public bus (line 120) from the city's main terminal is named as one way to reach the entrance. The outing involves a lot of walking along boardwalks and wet viewing areas, so wear shoes with grip and pace yourself. Rest the day before.
Small luggage lockers may not fit a suitcase, so leave your main bag at the hotel and take only a light day pack.
Where to Stay
- Rafain Palace Hotel & Convention is rated 4.8 on Tripadvisor from 431 reviews.
- Che Lagarto Foz do Iguaçu is rated 4.5 from over 2,000 reviews and is the budget choice.
Grand Carimã Resort & Convention Center, rated 4.7, is a further option on the road towards the falls. Ask about breakfast, transfers and late checkout when you book.
Where to Eat
Foz has a long list of restaurants for a city of its size, from Brazilian grills to buffets. Ask your hotel for a table near where you are staying and avoid long walks at the end of a day on your feet.
Getting Home
Take the coach back to Asunción on day five and allow generous time for the border. If you fly home from Silvio Pettirossi airport (ASU) on the same day, leave a large margin. Alternatively, Foz do Iguaçu has its own airport (IGU) if your onward flight leaves from Brazil.
