San Bernardino is a lake town, and in late August the lake is the whole point. The summer crowds are not here, the water is cold and the shoreline is quiet. After a marathon this is a feature, because there is nothing to do except walk slowly, eat and sleep.

August in San Bernardino: August is the end of the dry winter. Days are mild, evenings cool and swimming and summer resort activities should not be assumed. Pack a light layer and do not plan on a beach day.

Getting There

Ask your Asunción hotel for a driver and agree the return at the same time. If you use public transport, check the coach operator, the journey time and the last return coach at the terminal before you commit. Leave after a recovery morning rather than straight from the finish area.

The Evening and Morning

Walk the level shoreline for the first hour and keep it short. The ground along the lake is flat, which is the right gradient for tired quadriceps. Sit down early for dinner, and leave the afternoon free for sleep.

Check opening hours for any café or museum before you go, since small-town hours change with the season and midweek can be quiet.

Where to Stay

  • Tava Glamping Cerro is rated 4.5 on Tripadvisor from a small number of reviews, with a pool in the common areas.
  • Tava Glamping is rated 4.2 on the same site and sits further out of town.

Both are small properties, so read recent reviews, confirm breakfast and ask about transfers when you book.

Where to Eat

Ask your host for a dinner table and book it, because small lakeside places may close early on weeknights. Grilled meat, river fish and local soups are the usual order.

Getting Home

Arrange the transfer back to Asunción for the next morning, and allow time for the road and for any onward flight from Silvio Pettirossi airport (ASU).
