For runners wanting somewhere quieter than Bath or Bristol, both Bradford-on-Avon and Frome offer a genuinely low-effort day by rail, with neither requiring much walking beyond a compact town centre. October in the West Country: both towns are past their summer visitor peak, making for an easy, uncrowded day regardless of which is chosen.

Bradford-on-Avon

Bradford-on-Avon, a small Wiltshire town on the River Avon, is built around a historic stone bridge and a steep hillside of Georgian and Cotswold-stone houses. The town centre itself is compact and largely flat along the riverside, though the surrounding streets climb noticeably, worth bearing in mind for legs still recovering from the marathon. The tithe barn, a large 14th-century stone barn on the edge of town, is a genuine, low-effort historic sight reachable via flat riverside paths.

Frome

Frome, a market town in Somerset known for its independent shops and a well-preserved medieval street pattern, particularly around Catherine Hill, offers a similarly gentle day. Its Sunday market, when running, adds a specific reason to visit, and the town centre is compact enough to cover without much walking.
