The Route: Belfast → Derry/Londonderry Logistics: Direct Translink train from Belfast Grand Central Station, roughly 2 hours, or an organised day tour by coach. Marathon Month: May Duration: 1 night
Belfast Grand Central ──(2 hrs direct train)──> Derry/Londonderry
Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland's second city, is far enough from Belfast that a same-day return leaves little real time in the city itself, making an overnight stay the more comfortable option for legs still recovering from the marathon. May in Derry: mild, long-daylight conditions suit the city's flat, walkable historic core without demanding much of tired legs.
Night One: Derry/Londonderry
The City Walls, one of the best-preserved set of city walls in Europe and largely intact, offer a flat, roughly one-mile circuit with views over both the old city and the River Foyle, an easy, self-paced way to get oriented without needing a guided tour. The Bogside, just below the walls, carries some of the city's most significant Troubles-era murals and is the site of Bloody Sunday; the Museum of Free Derry, in the same area, provides detailed context for anyone wanting to understand the history rather than just view the murals.
Where to stay: The Bishop's Gate Hotel, inside the historic walled city itself, puts a runner within the flat, walkable core described above. The City Hotel, on the riverside just outside the walls, offers a similarly central alternative with water views.
Where to eat: Badgers Bar, inside the city walls, is a long-established, relaxed spot for an evening meal. Browns Restaurant, a short distance from the centre, offers a more formal dining option for those wanting a proper sit-down meal after the walking tour.
