The Belo Horizonte Marathon is run on a Sunday in June, and Monday is the day when the legs are at their worst. Sabará is close enough to reach without a flight or a night away, and it is a place where the visit can be broken into short blocks.

June in Sabará: June is the dry season in the region, with INMET's Belo Horizonte normals putting June rainfall at 11.4 mm, a mean daily minimum of 15.4°C and a mean daily maximum of 24.9°C. Mornings are cool and the middle of the day is comfortable. Rain is unlikely but not impossible, so carry a light waterproof.

The Town

The municipality's tourism pages list historic churches, Rua Pedro II and the Casa da Ópera among the attractions. The state tourism board places Sabará roughly 25 km from Belo Horizonte as part of a historic-towns route. That is a distance, not a promise about how long the road takes on a Monday morning.

Monday is the difficulty. The state listing shows the São Francisco church closed on Mondays, and other church and museum interiors may follow the same pattern. A plan for Monday should rest on the streets and a seated lunch, with church visits as a bonus if a door happens to be open. If you can wait a day, Tuesday is a better day for interiors.

The streets are historic and the surfaces are uneven, with slopes and steps to many church entrances. Keep to short blocks of 20 to 30 minutes with seated breaks in between, and use the car for anything uphill. Check for a current regional bus service, or ask your hotel to arrange a car with a fixed return time, and keep your main luggage at the Belo Horizonte hotel by prior agreement.

Getting Back

Return to Belo Horizonte rather than adding a same-day flight. If you do need to fly the same evening, Confins airport (CNF) is the main airport, and the Conexão Aeroporto coach to Álvares Cabral takes about 50 minutes on the operator's ordinary estimate, before you add a leg to your hotel. Leave a generous buffer.
