After the Bergen City Marathon: A Second Day in Bergen

The Route: Bryggen → Fløibanen → Gamle Bergen → Bergen Airport Logistics: One hotel, no luggage moves. The funicular does the climbing for you. Marathon Month: April Duration: 1 night

Bryggen (hotel) ──(walk)──> Fløibanen ──(funicular, 6 min)──> Fløyen ──(back down)──> old town ──(light rail line 1)──> Airport

The marathon finishes at Bryggen, so the sights the course ran past are all still there on Sunday. Keep the same hotel for one more night and see them seated, or at least slowly.

April in Bergen. Spring is cool and often wet, and the days are getting longer. Many attractions keep reduced hours at this time of year, so check each one. Bring a waterproof and a hat.

Morning: Bryggen

Bryggen is a wharf of old merchants' houses and a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the marathon starts and finishes there. A short heritage walk fits a recovery day. The ground is cobbled and uneven, so go slowly and avoid a long standing tour.

Midday: Fløibanen

The Fløibanen funicular climbs Mount Fløyen, 320 metres above sea level, in about six minutes, and runs all year. The operator's listing gave hours of 07:30 to midnight and a winter return ticket at NOK 145 for adults. Hours and prices change by season, so check before you go. At the top are restaurants, cafés, shops, trails and a viewpoint over the city, the fjord and the mountains. Both stations are step-free, with spacious cabins. Take the funicular up and down, since a walk down would punish your quads.

Afternoon: Gamle Bergen

Gamle Bergen is the old-town museum area that the course passes. The April opening schedule varies, so check before you go. Take the light rail or a taxi if the distance is more than you want to walk.

Evening

Book dinner ahead, since Bergen restaurants fill on a Saturday night and kitchens close early on Sundays.

Getting home

Bergen Light Rail line 1 links the centre with the airport, and an airport bus is also available. Check the timetable for the first morning departures, and leave a generous margin before an international flight.
