You do not need to leave the reserve to recover. The package already holds the next day together: a scheduled afternoon game drive and a celebration dinner. Keep your luggage at the lodge and treat the rest as optional.
June in Entabeni: June is winter. The organiser warns of very cold early and late hours and gives a general daytime range of 15 to 25 degrees. An afternoon drive in an open vehicle will end in the cold, so bring a proper jacket, gloves and something for your ears.
The Morning
Sleep. Breakfast is served at the lodge, and the only job is to walk to it. If your quads object to stairs, ask for a table close to your room. Lakeside guests have the least distance to cover. At lodges an hour or so from the venue, the post-race transfer will have left you tired, so a late start costs nothing.
The Afternoon Drive
A game drive is seated and slow, and it suits legs that ran a trail marathon. The guide chooses the route, and nobody can promise which animals you will see. Ask about the boarding step before you go, because a high vehicle is awkward on sore legs. A ranger-led bush walk is also offered in the itinerary, but check its length and terrain before booking it the day after a marathon.
The Dinner
The celebration dinner is in the package. Confirm the time and the dress at the lodge desk, and bring the warm layer. If you travelled with a non-runner, this is the evening to compare notes on what each of you saw.
Getting Onward
The next day's transfer to Johannesburg O.R. Tambo follows the group schedule in your booking. Confirm the pick-up time at the lodge and leave room for your flight.
