Blackpool's own promenade carries the marathon itself, so the day after suits somewhere quieter along the same coastline. Lytham St Annes, a short journey south, swaps Blackpool's resort energy for a calmer, more residential seafront. April on the Fylde coast: outside the peak summer season, both towns are noticeably quieter than in July or August.

St Annes and Lytham

St Annes' promenade and pier offer a gentler version of Blackpool's own seafront, flat and easy walking with far fewer crowds. The town's independent shops along Wood Street and Clifton Drive suit an unhurried browse. Lytham, a short distance further along, is built around a windmill on the green and a quieter, more traditional English seaside character, with a flat coastal path linking the two towns for anyone wanting a longer, gentle walk.

Where to eat: St Annes and Lytham both carry a good spread of cafés and restaurants along their respective high streets, generally more relaxed in pace than central Blackpool's seafront options.
