The Blantyre marathon has finished in late September at Kamuzu Stadium. Thyolo is where the tea is grown, in the hills south-east of Blantyre, and the estates run factory tours and tastings.

September in Thyolo: dry season. The estates are green year-round, but rain-free days make the roads reliable. The hills are cooler than Blantyre in the early morning.

Arrange a driver and agree the return trip before leaving. Journey times depend on traffic and road conditions, so ask your driver for a current estimate. Foreign office advice cautions against night driving, so aim to arrive in daylight.

Night One: Thyolo

Malawi Tourism describes the Satemwa experience as a factory tour followed by a tasting. The tour involves standing and some steps, so ask whether a seated tasting without the full factory walk is available. Booking ahead is sensible.

The estate paths between the tea rows are flat in places and rise gently in others. A short walk in the early evening is enough. Ask the estate staff which paths are easy underfoot.

Where to Stay

Satemwa runs lodging on its estate; Huntingdon House and the Chawani cottages are the best known. Check the current availability and what meals are included. Take a layer for the evenings.

Where to Eat

Meals at estate lodges are usually served to guests, so confirm dinner when you book. Expect Malawian and simple Western dishes; ask what is on the menu that day.

Getting to Chileka Airport (BLZ)

Return to Blantyre by car, then continue to Chileka International Airport (BLZ). Protea Ryalls lists the airport at about 15 km from its hotel, so allow time for the Blantyre stretch and book your transfer before you leave. Leave extra time on the day of departure.
