The stretch of the Rhine between Koblenz and Bingen is the one on every postcard: steep vineyard terraces, a castle roughly every few kilometres, and a river valley narrow enough that the road, the railway and the water all compete for the same strip of land. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage list for exactly this density of landscape and history. For a runner with two nights to spare, Boppard makes a better base than Koblenz itself: smaller, quieter, and built around one of the most useful assets in this entire guide for recovering legs.
April on the Middle Rhine falls before the valley's main river-cruise season reaches full frequency, and before the vineyard terraces show much beyond bare vines. That is a fair trade for a runner two days removed from a marathon: fewer crowds at the castles, and a promenade walk that is about the view and the water rather than the greenery.
Nights One and Two: Boppard
Boppard's Rheinallee is the primary recovery asset here: a flat, paved promenade running for well over a kilometre directly along the riverbank, with benches at frequent intervals and no gradient worth mentioning. At a slow, post-marathon pace, walking the full length and back takes perhaps 45 minutes, less if the legs are not cooperating and a shorter loop is more sensible.
For anyone wanting a view without walking, the Sesselbahn Boppard chairlift climbs from the edge of town to the Vierseenblick ("four lakes view"), a viewpoint where the Rhine's bends create the optical illusion of four separate lakes rather than one river. The chairlift does the climbing; the viewing platform at the top is level. A return ticket runs approximately €10 (£8.50), though prices should be checked before travelling.
Boppard's old town itself is compact and mostly flat, built around a core of half-timbered buildings and a Roman-era fort wall, remnants of which are still visible near the parish church. The town does not demand a full day of walking to see properly.
Where to stay: the Bellevue Rheinhotel Boppard sits directly on the promenade, a genuinely no-walk option for anyone who wants their hotel room to look straight out over the water. The Hotel Ebertor, a short flat walk into the old town, is a smaller, quieter alternative for a two-night stay.
Where to eat: Weinhaus Heilig Grab, in the old town, serves regional Rhineland cooking alongside its own Riesling; a Winzerteller (a mixed plate built around local wine-country produce) suits a recovery dinner without requiring a long evening out.
Getting Home
Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) is reached by returning along the same regional rail line via Koblenz and Bonn, a total journey of roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on connections. Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is also a realistic option from this part of the Rhine, with a direct or one-change regional and ICE connection; compare both against flight availability before booking, since neither is automatically the faster or cheaper choice for every UK departure city.
