After the Maratona del Mugello: Florence

The Route: Borgo San Lorenzo → Florence → Florence Peretola Airport (FLR) or Pisa (PSA) Logistics: A regional train of roughly an hour. Check the timetable for the Monday. Marathon Month: September Duration: 1 night

The Maratona del Mugello finishes in Borgo San Lorenzo on a Sunday, and Florence is the obvious place for a last night. The organiser's own advice for runners staying in Florence is to check the early Sunday train to Borgo, so the link exists, but Sunday and Monday frequencies need checking. Keep a margin for a cancelled train.

September in Florence is warm and busy. Book a room early, and book timed tickets for museums.

Night one: Florence

The historic centre is small and level. The Duomo, the Baptistery and the Ponte Vecchio are within a short walk, and the embankments along the Arno are flat with benches. The Uffizi and the Accademia need timed tickets, and some museums close on Mondays, so check opening days.

Avoid the dome climb and the hill to Piazzale Michelangelo. A taxi or bus gives the view without the stairs.

Where to stay

Stay near Santa Maria Novella station or the flat part of the centre. Book a refundable room and ask about lift access.

Food

Florentine dishes are easy to find, and restaurants fill early. Ask the hotel for current recommendations and book a table.

Getting Home

Florence Peretola Airport (FLR) is linked to the city by tram and taxi. Pisa (PSA) has more international flights and is reached by train. Check schedules before choosing.
