After the Maratona del Mugello: Scarperia and San Piero a Sieve
The Route: Borgo San Lorenzo → San Piero a Sieve → Scarperia → Borgo San Lorenzo Logistics: A hire car is simplest. Local buses run between the towns, but check the Monday timetable. Marathon Month: September Duration: Day trip
Borgo San Lorenzo ──(car or bus, check timetable)──> San Piero a Sieve ──> Scarperia ──> Borgo San Lorenzo
The Maratona del Mugello starts and finishes in Piazza Dante in Borgo San Lorenzo, and its loop takes in San Piero a Sieve and Scarperia in the second half. Runners see them at the stage of the day when they are mostly looking at the road. A Monday visit gives them properly.
September in the Mugello is usually warm by midday, with the valley hazy and quiet after the weekend. Take a hat and water, and check opening hours, because small-town shops and churches often close on Mondays.
San Piero a Sieve
The route's western point is a small town in the valley, reached by road from Borgo San Lorenzo. The centre can be walked in under an hour. Check which sights and cafes are open, since many keep reduced Monday hours.
Scarperia
Scarperia lies to the north, and the marathon passes beside the Mugello Circuit on Via Buozzi on the way back towards Luco. The circuit is a motor-racing venue, and its calendar decides whether roads and hotels are busy, so check the dates before visiting. The town centre is a short, level walk. Check the opening hours of any museum or workshop.
Food
Ask the hotel for lunch recommendations in the valley, and book a table if you want a sit-down meal. Menus and opening days change with the season.
Getting back
Return to Borgo San Lorenzo the way you came. If relying on a bus, check the last departure before lunch. A taxi is the fallback.
