After the Maratona del Mugello: Vicchio
The Route: Borgo San Lorenzo → Vicchio → Borgo San Lorenzo Logistics: A short drive or a local bus. Check the Monday timetable. Marathon Month: September Duration: Day trip
Borgo San Lorenzo ──(car or bus along the SP551, check timetable)──> Vicchio ──(same road back)──> Borgo San Lorenzo
The Maratona del Mugello leaves Piazza Dante and runs east on the SP551 to Vicchio in the opening kilometres, through Ponte a Vicchio, and then turns back via Sagginale. The half marathon field shares that stretch, so the road is crowded and most runners never look up. On Monday it is quiet.
September in Vicchio is warm and dry in most years, and a light layer and a hat are enough. Check opening hours for churches and museums, since small towns often close on Mondays.
The town
Vicchio is a small town in the valley, and its centre can be walked in an hour. The organiser's own marketing for the 2026 race follows a fictional character discovering Vicchio and the countryside between Sagginale, Serravalle and Cardetole, so the area is part of the race's identity. Sagginale and Ponte a Vicchio are on the road out and back and can be reached by car.
The ground here is almost level on the supplied track, which suits stiff legs. Keep the plan short and slow.
Food
Ask at the hotel for a lunch recommendation, and book a table. Opening days change with the season.
Getting back
Return to Borgo San Lorenzo by the same road. If taking a bus, check the last departure before lunch. A taxi is the fallback.
