The marathon's own route runs through the flat, drained farmland of the Fens, and the coastal marshes just outside Boston offer the same flat character in a wilder, tidal form. April on the Wash: spring migration is in full swing, making this a particularly active time of year for the reserves' bird populations.

RSPB Frampton Marsh

RSPB Frampton Marsh, a short drive from Boston, sits on the edge of the Wash and is one of the RSPB's most highly regarded reserves for wading birds and wildfowl, with a visitor centre and a network of flat, level paths that suit legs still recovering from the marathon. Hides positioned around the reserve allow extended, low-effort birdwatching without much walking required.

Freiston Shore

Freiston Shore, a further stretch of RSPB-managed saltmarsh and mudflat along the same coastline, offers similarly flat walking with views out across the Wash itself, a genuinely wide, open landscape that echoes the marathon's own Fenland setting.

Getting Back

The return drive to Boston retraces the same short route from either reserve.
