The Nocny Maraton Kanału Bydgoskiego ends in the early hours of a Sunday, with timing closing at 03:00. Most runners sleep through the morning, so Toruń is a Sunday-afternoon or Monday outing. It is the nearest large destination: a direct regional train takes roughly 49 to 53 minutes, and the fastest direct service, the EC 460 Baltic Express, takes 42 minutes.

June in Toruń: bring sun protection and water, and check opening days, because many museums close on Mondays.

The Old Town

Toruń's Old Town is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Old Town Square holds the Gingerbread Star Alley, and Dom Artusa, a red-brick neo-Renaissance building that hosts concerts, stands on the square.

The Leaning Tower and Copernicus

The Leaning Tower leans 146.2 cm off vertical. Dom Kopernika is a multimedia museum on Copernicus's life and era, set in a historic Hanseatic-style house. Opening hours and prices are not given in the sources used, so confirm them before queuing.

Gingerbread

Toruń gingerbread has been baked since the Hanseatic era. At the Living Gingerbread Museum visitors can bake their own. It suits a stretch of the afternoon with tired legs.

The cathedral

The Gothic Cathedral of St John has vaults rising 27 m. It holds Copernicus's epitaph and the heart of King Jan Olbracht. The bell tower leads, by 200 winding steps, to the bell Tuba Dei, which is among the largest in Poland. Skip the steps after a marathon.

Getting there and back

Fares start at about PLN 20 (about £4) on regional trains, PLN 24 on the EC 460 and PLN 42 on Intercity services. About 15 connections run each day, the first at 02:41 and the last at 22:38, according to a rail-booking site. Check the last return before the evening, and buy tickets up to 30 days ahead.
