The Colombian coffee region, known as the Eje Cafetero, lies in the Andean hills north of Cali. Salento, in the department of Quindío, is a small town of painted balconies and steep streets above the Cocora Valley, which is home to the Quindío wax palm, Colombia's national tree. The palms can reach 60 m and rise from open pasture in a landscape of green and mist.

The journey takes about four hours by road, usually by bus to Armenia and then a local bus or taxi on to Salento. A hired driver costs more and saves a change. Allow a long day for the transfer, and avoid booking anything on the first afternoon. Check current bus times and road conditions before you travel.

April in Quindío

April is one of the wetter months in the coffee hills, with showers most afternoons and mud on the trails. Salento sits around 1,900 m, with days near 20 to 22 °C and cool nights. Bring a waterproof, a fleece and shoes that can get dirty.

Nights one and two: Salento

The recovery walk is Calle Real, the main pedestrian street, lined with craft shops, coloured doorways and cafés. It slopes gently, with a flat stretch through the centre. Eat trout from the nearby farms, with patacones, and drink coffee grown a few kilometres away.

Climb the stairs to the Alto de la Cruz viewpoint on the second day, not the first. There are around 250 steps, steep and uneven, and they are hard on tired quads. The view over the Cocora Valley and the coffee hills is worth it, and you can stop at the landings.

Choose a small hotel or guesthouse within a few streets of the main plaza, ideally on the ground floor or with a lift. Rooms are simple and prices modest. Weekends fill, so book ahead.

Day three: the Cocora Valley

Willys jeeps carry visitors from the plaza to the valley entrance in about 30 minutes. The full loop trail through cloud forest to the palms takes around five hours and includes several muddy climbs and wooden bridges. After a marathon, do the short version: walk the open meadow to the viewpoint and the palms, then return. Keep an eye on the weather, since afternoon rain arrives quickly.

Night four: a coffee farm

Several farms around Salento offer tours of coffee growing, picking, drying and roasting, with a tasting at the end. Book a morning tour with transport included. Nights on a farm or in a hotel in the countryside make a quiet end to the trip.

Getting home

Return to Cali by bus or driver, about four hours, or fly from Armenia (AXM) or Pereira (PEI) to connect onwards. Alfonso Bonilla Aragón airport (CLO) is the Cali gateway, so leave at least seven hours between Salento and an international departure. Check the Cocora trail conditions and the bus timetable before you travel.
