The marathon is on a Sunday, so Ouidah is a Monday job. The town was a port in the slave trade, and the Captives' Route and the Gate of No Return are its best-known sites. The visit deserves a reflective half-day and no rush.
February in Ouidah: it is a warm, humid coastal climate, with roughly 30 mm of rain in a typical February. The January Vodun Days festival is over by then, so do not plan around a festival.
Getting There
The Benin tourism portal puts Ouidah at about 40 km and an hour from Cotonou. Leave your luggage at your hotel by arrangement and travel with a booked driver or, if you prefer, an ordinary public service. Check the current public timetable and ask your driver for a return pick-up time.
The Day
The Captives' Route runs for about four kilometres. After a marathon, do not walk it all. Use the car for the longer stretches and walk the shorter ones, with a seat in the shade between them. Ask a local guide for the background, because the sites need context. Any new memory museum in the town is described as forthcoming, so check whether it is open before you plan around it.
Lunch
Eat where your driver or guide suggests, in the shade, and confirm that the place is open on a Monday.
Getting Home
Return to Cotonou by car in the afternoon. Cotonou airport (COO) is the arrival point for most visitors, and a hotel transfer is the simplest way to reach it.
