After the Cotonou Marathon: Four Nights in Southern Benin

The Route: Cotonou → Porto-Novo and Adjarra → Ouidah → Abomey → Cotonou (final night) → Airport Logistics: Hire one driver for the whole circuit and ask for realistic road times before you book. Marathon Month: February Duration: 4 nights

This circuit covers three of southern Benin's best-known places and ends in Cotonou, so that your flight is never the same day as a long drive. It sticks to the south on purpose: Pendjari and W national parks are not suitable extensions under current advice.

February in southern Benin: it is warm and humid, with roughly 30 mm of rain in a typical February.

Getting There

Book one driver for the whole circuit. Ask them for road times for each leg, since published figures are ordinary estimates only. The Benin tourism portal gives about 45 km and an hour from Cotonou to Porto-Novo, about 10 km from Porto-Novo to Adjarra and about 40 km and an hour from Cotonou to Ouidah.

Night One: Porto-Novo

Take a short city walk and then the seated Rivière Noire canoe trip at Adjarra. Ask about boarding, lifejackets and how long you will be seated.

Night Two: Ouidah

See the Captives' Route and the Gate of No Return in short stretches, using the car for the longer parts. A local guide supplies the context.

Night Three: Abomey

The national tourism site names Abomey for its royal palace heritage. It also describes a new museum as forthcoming, so check which institution runs the visit and whether it is open. Break the journey and ask your driver for rest stops.

Night Four: Cotonou

Finish in Cotonou so that the last day is short. Leave your bags at the hotel and use the morning to rest.

Getting Home

Cotonou airport (COO) is the arrival point for most visitors, and a booked transfer is the simplest way to reach it. Leave a generous buffer.
