The Maratona de Curitiba ends in the city, and the falls lie far to the west, on the border with Argentina. The Brazilian side is organised for visitors, with a bus, a trail and lifts, which suits tired legs better than most big sights.

November in Foz do Iguaçu: Late spring, hot and humid, with storms possible. Water levels change through the year. Bring a light waterproof, sun cream, a hat and shoes with good grip, because wet walkways are slippery.

Check flights or a coach for your date before committing, and treat the first and last days as travel days. The park uses timed online tickets, requires photo identification and runs an internal bus. Book the ticket for a day when you will have rested.

Day one: arrive and rest

Keep the first evening quiet. A short walk near the hotel and an early dinner are enough. Ask your hotel about the park ticket and the transfer, since both are easier to arrange locally.

Day two: the Brazilian falls

The park's trail is about 1 km, with viewpoints and lifts included. Take the internal bus to the start, walk the trail slowly, and use the lifts rather than the stairs. The walkways are wet near the water, and standing still on hard surfaces adds fatigue. Expect to spend a half day, and leave the afternoon free. Check opening hours and the timed ticket before going.

Day three: a spare day

Use this as a rest day or a short outing, depending on your legs and the weather. The Argentine side involves a border crossing and separate transport, and it needs its own planning, so it is outside this plan. If you want it, check entry rules and transport locally.

Where to stay

Choose a hotel with a pool and an easy transfer to the park, with breakfast at a sensible hour. Ask about luggage storage on the day you leave, and avoid assuming that the park has free lockers.

Pacing the trip

Travel days after a marathon are tiring. Walk the aisle on the flight or at coach stops, drink water and keep your shoes loose. Save tickets and bookings offline before you go. Heat and humidity can be draining, so plan the park visit for the cooler part of the morning.

Eating and resting

Foz has plenty of restaurants, and most hotels can recommend a good one near the hotel. Book dinner early on the day after the falls, when legs are stiffest, and choose a place that is a short taxi ride away. Drink more water than you think you need in the heat. If the weather is stormy, the park may delay or close some areas, so keep the second day flexible.

Getting around

Taxis and app cars are the simplest way to move between the hotel, the park and dinner, and your hotel can book them. Public buses run, but they involve waiting and walking. Keep photo identification with you at all times, as the park asks for it at the gate. Confirm opening hours and the timed ticket the evening before, and carry a small bag with water, a rain layer and sun cream.

Getting Home

Return to Curitiba by the same route you used to arrive, and check the schedule before booking. Afonso Pena International Airport (CWB) is in São José dos Pinhais, about 18 km from the centre, so allow time for a taxi or bus into the city.
