After a genuinely hilly, exposed moorland marathon, Plymouth's waterfront offers a complete change of scene, flat, coastal and properly urban compared with Dartmoor's rural setting. April in Plymouth: the Hoe and waterfront are into spring, with generally comfortable conditions for an easy walk along the water.

The Barbican and Plymouth Hoe

The Barbican, Plymouth's historic harbourside quarter, is a genuine working waterfront with cobbled streets, independent shops and a concentration of restaurants, flat and easy walking throughout. Plymouth Hoe, a grassy headland overlooking Plymouth Sound, offers wide sea views and the red-and-white Smeaton's Tower lighthouse, a low-effort landmark stop without much walking required to reach it.

Where to eat: The Barbican's waterfront has a strong concentration of restaurants and pubs, many with harbour views, a straightforward choice for lunch or dinner.

Getting Back

The return drive or train to Tavistock retraces the same short journey from Plymouth.
