Princetown, passed directly on the marathon course itself, is worth returning to properly rather than seeing only mid-stride during the race. April in Princetown: the highest village on Dartmoor, it sits exposed to whatever weather is moving across the moor, so checking conditions before travelling is sensible.

Dartmoor Prison and the Museum

Dartmoor Prison, still an operational prison, dominates the village of Princetown and is one of the moor's most recognisable landmarks, the same building the marathon route passes directly. The Dartmoor Prison Museum, in the village itself, covers the prison's history in detail, from its origins housing prisoners of war through to the present day, a genuinely low-effort indoor stop well suited to legs recovering from the marathon.

Where to eat: Princetown has a small selection of pubs and cafés, a straightforward stop for lunch before heading back.

Getting Back

The return drive to Tavistock retraces the same 20 to 30 minute route across the moor.
