The Air Force Marathon finishes on a Saturday morning, which puts the Sunday after it on the best day of the week for Wright brothers history. The two National Park Service interpretive centres are open Wednesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00 and closed on Monday and Tuesday. Carillon Historical Park opens on Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00, a shorter day than its Monday to Saturday hours of 09:30 to 17:00. A car is the working option, so check the drive time from your hotel before setting off.
September in Dayton: Daily temperatures run from a low of 13.8°C to a high of 25.9°C. Mornings are cool and afternoons warm, so a light layer is enough. Conditions vary, and the park is largely outdoors, so check the forecast.
The morning: Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center
Start at the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center, which covers the Wright brothers' years in Dayton and the work of their friend, the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. It opens at 09:00, so it suits stiff legs, because the walking is indoors and short. Allow an hour. The Huffman Prairie Interpretive Center, run by the same service on the same days and hours, stands beside the field where the brothers refined their machine. The marathon course passes this field at about mile 3, so it makes a quiet comparison with the morning before.
The afternoon: Carillon Historical Park
Carillon Historical Park opens at 12:00 on Sunday and closes at 17:00. Adult admission was $14 when last listed, and parking is free. The park is a set of historic buildings in open ground, so the walking is on paths, and there is a lot of standing. A day after 42.195 km, move slowly and use the benches.
Where to eat
Carillon Brewing Co. is on the park's grounds and is open on Sunday from 11:00 to 19:00, which suits a lunch before the park opens or a late meal after it. Culp's Café, also in the park, is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00, so it closes before the park does. The AC Hotel Dayton's restaurant, The Foundry, offers a downtown alternative, though its Saturday opening time should be checked before relying on it.
Getting back
Both centres close at 16:00, and the park closes at 17:00. Drive back to your hotel in daylight, and leave time for the traffic that follows a race weekend. Check opening hours at nps.gov and carillonpark.org before setting out, because seasonal hours can change.
