The Air Force Marathon finishes on a Saturday morning, so the first night is best spent close to the base and the second in a bigger city. The order matters in Cincinnati, because Findlay Market is closed on Mondays while the Cincinnati Museum Center is open every day. Sunday is the day for the market, and Monday is for the museum.

September in Dayton and Cincinnati: Dayton averages run from a daily low of 13.8°C to a high of 25.9°C. Cincinnati is a drive south, and conditions vary, so check the forecast and carry a light layer.

Night one: Dayton

The AC Hotel Dayton, at 124 Madison Street, is a downtown option, with The Foundry on site. Its Saturday opening time was unconfirmed at 16:00, so check before planning dinner there. Carillon Brewing Co. serves food and beer from 11:00 to 21:00 on Saturdays, but it is a drive from downtown.

Night two: Cincinnati

Drive south on Sunday morning. Findlay Market, at 1801 Race Street, is open on Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00, and on Tuesday to Friday from 09:00 to 18:00 and Saturday from 08:00 to 18:00. It is closed on Monday. The streetcar stops at the market, so a hotel in the downtown or Over-the-Rhine area keeps both the market and the museum within reach without a car. Check hotel availability and parking charges before booking, because rates vary.

The Cincinnati Museum Center, at 1301 Western Avenue, is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00. Parking costs $6 per day, and the building has step-free elevators, which helps on sore legs. Check admission prices on the museum's website before going.

Getting back

On Monday, visit the Museum Center in the morning, then drive to your airport or home. Leave a generous margin before any flight, and check the drive time from Cincinnati on the day.
