The Route: Wright-Patterson finish → Dayton (two nights) → Cincinnati (two nights) → home Logistics: Car between the cities, and the streetcar within Cincinnati. Check the drive time on the day, because it is not published here. Marathon Month: September Duration: 4 nights
Museum finish ──> Dayton (nights one and two) ──(drive south)──> Cincinnati (nights three and four)
The Air Force Marathon finishes on a Saturday morning, which sets the order of this route. The two National Park Service centres in Dayton are open Wednesday to Sunday, so they take the Sunday. Monday is for Carillon Historical Park, which is open every day, and for the drive to Cincinnati, where Findlay Market is closed on Monday but open on Tuesday.
September in Dayton and Cincinnati: Dayton averages run from a daily low of 13.8°C to a high of 25.9°C. Conditions vary, so carry a light layer.
Nights one and two: Dayton
Saturday night is for sitting down. The AC Hotel Dayton, at 124 Madison Street, has The Foundry on site, though its Saturday opening time was unconfirmed at 16:00, so check first.
On Sunday, the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center and the Huffman Prairie Interpretive Center are open from 09:00 to 16:00. Carillon Historical Park opens at 12:00 on Sunday and closes at 17:00. Adult admission was $14, with free parking. Carillon Brewing Co. is open on Sunday from 11:00 to 19:00.
Monday is slower. The park is open from 09:30 to 17:00, and Carillon Brewing Co. serves from 11:00 to 21:00 on Wednesday to Saturday, so check its Monday hours. Drive south in the afternoon.
Nights three and four: Cincinnati
Findlay Market, at 1801 Race Street, is closed on Mondays, so plan it for Tuesday, when it opens from 09:00 to 18:00. The streetcar stops at the market. A hotel in the downtown or Over-the-Rhine area keeps the market and the Museum Center within reach without a car. Check rates and parking before booking.
The Cincinnati Museum Center, at 1301 Western Avenue, is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00. Parking costs $6 per day, and the building has step-free elevators. Check admission prices on the museum's website. By Tuesday, three days after the marathon, the walking is a fair test of the legs, and the elevators help on the way.
Getting back
On Wednesday, drive to your airport or home. Leave a generous margin before any flight, and check the drive time from Cincinnati on the day.
