After the Maraton Dębno: Berlin

The Route: Dębno → Kostrzyn nad Odrą → Berlin → home Logistics: Road to Kostrzyn, rail to Berlin, two nights, then Berlin Brandenburg (BER). Mostly on foot and by city rail. Marathon Month: April or October Duration: 2 nights

Dębno ──(road)──> Kostrzyn station ──(RB26 regional line)──> Berlin (two nights) ──> BER

Berlin is the obvious extension from Dębno. The marathon ends on a Sunday, so the first day in Berlin is a Monday, and Monday is the day many Berlin museums close. The Bode-Museum on Museum Island says so on its own site, and other museums can differ, so check the one you want before you plan around it. The plan below keeps Monday for outdoor time and moves the museum to Tuesday.

April and October in Berlin: both months are cool, with rain a real possibility and the light fading early in October. Pack a waterproof layer, and plan indoor stops for the afternoon.

The rail route runs from Kostrzyn nad Odrą on the NEB RB26 line, which links Kostrzyn with Berlin through Müncheberg. The organiser sends rail travellers to Kostrzyn, so the road leg to Kostrzyn comes first. On race day the organiser runs a free coach from the race office to Kostrzyn station on set times, so a runner can ride it to the station after the finish. Check the current timetable. NEB states that Brandenburg-Berlin tickets extend to Kostrzyn, but an ordinary Berlin city ticket may not cover the Polish extension, so ask at the machine or the counter before travelling. Long-distance and regional trains on the Berlin Stadtbahn are disrupted until 12 December 2026, so build in a buffer and check the work notices.

Night one: outdoors on the recovery day

Choose a walk that keeps its distance short and its ground flat. A slow loop beside the river or through a park suits legs that ran 42 km the day before. Berlin is a flat city, so stairs in stations are the main hazard. Look for lifts, and avoid carrying a heavy bag.

Eat early and sleep early. A Monday evening is the time to rest, not the time for a long itinerary.

Night two: a museum on Tuesday

Museum Island is a short ride from the city centre, and the Bode-Museum stands at its northern tip. Check opening hours and ticket prices before going. Allow two or three hours for one museum and no more, since standing on stone floors tires sore legs quickly.

Where to stay

Choose a hotel near a rail station on the S-Bahn or U-Bahn, so that you can ride between sights. Check cancellation terms before booking.

Getting home

Berlin Brandenburg (BER) is the usual airport. The FEX airport express takes about 23 minutes to the main station, but it does not connect directly to the RB26, so allow time to change. Check the timetable on the day.
