The marathon finishes on a Sunday, and the day after is a Monday. That decides the plan here, because the fortress museum in Kostrzyn is closed on Mondays. What stays open is the ground itself. The old town of Kostrzyn was a fortress town, and what remains of it is a grid of streets with no buildings on them, laid out among grass, trees and the stumps of walls. You can walk it for free, at any hour, which suits a runner whose legs want to move but not much.
April and October in Kostrzyn: the Oder valley is open and wind comes straight across it. Spring mornings are cool and the ground can be wet underfoot. In October the light goes early, so plan the walk for the middle of the day and carry a layer.
Rail travellers are directed to Kostrzyn, which is where the rail network starts for Dębno. The distance by road is about 17 km. On race day the organiser runs a free coach between Kostrzyn station and the race office at set times, so a runner who has left a car or booked a room in Kostrzyn can use it. Check the current timetable on the race site, because the times change from year to year. On other days a taxi or a lift is the practical way. Ask your accommodation to book one the evening before.
The old town on foot
Start at the station and walk towards the ruins. The street grid is easy to follow even without a map, since the pavements and kerbs survive where the houses do not. The surface is mixed: some paved sections and some grass. The ground is level, so there is no climb to worry about, but it can be uneven in places. Allow an hour for an easy loop and longer if you stop to read the information boards.
The fortress museum
The fortress museum runs several branches. Bastion Filip is open Tuesday to Friday from 11:00 to 16:00 and at weekends from 10:00 to 16:00, with last entry at 15:00. It is closed on Mondays. The Berlin Gate branch opens only on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10:00 to 16:00. Check the current hours with the museum before travelling, since seasonal times vary. If you are staying a second night, Tuesday is the day for the interior.
Eating
Choose a place near the station or in the town centre, and ask your accommodation for a recommendation. Opening hours on a Monday in a small border town can be short, so ask before you set out.
Getting back
Return to Dębno by taxi or lift, or carry on by rail from the station. Kostrzyn has services towards Berlin and Szczecin. Look at the timetable for the day before you leave, and leave a margin if you have a flight to catch.
