The Midlands Meander is a driving route of studios, farm kitchens and galleries between Hilton and Mooi River, according to South African government tourism. You reach it by the N3, and the trip suits a runner because most of it is done from a car seat or a chair.

May in the Midlands: the area lies inland and higher than Durban, so evenings and mornings are cooler than on the coast. Pack a jacket and closed shoes.

Getting There

Ask a driver for the journey time to your chosen lodge rather than trusting a map, since it depends on the exact stop. Leave on the Monday or the Tuesday, not the morning after the race. A booked driver lets you sleep in the vehicle, and a hire car makes sense only if someone else will drive.

The Night

Pick one lodge and ask for a ground-floor room, an early dinner and a late breakfast. Ask how far the room is from the dining area, because short paths feel long after a marathon. The operator can quote the room and any transfer together.

The Next Day

Choose two or three stops close to your lodge and keep each visit short. Opening hours vary and some businesses close on Mondays, so phone ahead rather than depending on a published list. A long lunch at a farm kitchen counts as an activity.

Getting Home

Drive back to Durban in the afternoon. King Shaka International Airport (DUR) lists shuttle and taxi operators, so book a transfer for your flight and leave slack for the road.
