After the Durban International Marathon: A Slow Day in the Valley of a Thousand Hills
The Route: Durban hotel → Valley of a Thousand Hills → One short stop → Hotel Logistics: Book through an operator, agree a return time and ask for low walking. Marathon Month: May Duration: Day trip
Durban hotel ──(car, about 30 min)──> Valley of a Thousand Hills ──> Short stop ──(car)──> Hotel
The valley sits inland from Durban, and Durban Tourism puts it roughly 30 minutes from the city centre in ordinary conditions. That is close enough to be done in a day by someone who would rather not move far on the Monday.
May in Durban: the dry season is starting. A May table for the airport gives a mean of 19.8 degrees, so mornings can feel cool before the sun takes over. Bring a hat.
Getting There
Book a car or an operator transfer and agree the return time before you leave. A driver can wait at each stop, and you do not need to climb into a new vehicle at every viewpoint. Ask whether the vehicle has steps that are easy to manage, because sore quads make a high step feel steep.
The Day
Durban Tourism lists cultural visits and game drives in the area. Pick one and keep the rest of the day empty. Ask the operator about the walking involved and the time on your feet, and ask for a seat in the shade. Lunch at the same place as the visit avoids another drive.
The valley's steam railway runs only on selected Sundays, so do not plan around it for a Monday trip. Check the current schedule with the operator before you pay.
Getting Home
Return to your Durban hotel by the car you booked. Ask the hotel about luggage storage if you check out that day. King Shaka International Airport (DUR) lists shuttle and taxi operators for arrivals and departures, so arrange your transfer in advance and avoid travelling after dark on your own.
