The Enschede Marathon finishes in the centre of Enschede on a Sunday in April. Zwolle is the next large town west on the rail line, and its small centre is a good place to rest for one night.

April in Zwolle: daytime highs are about 13°C with showers likely. The trees along the moat are coming into leaf, and the blossom varies year to year. Check museum opening hours, because some close on Mondays.

Dutch rail has no advance fares, so there is nothing to book early. A single is paid by tapping in and out with a contactless card or OVpay. Check the NS planner for the connection, because some services need a change.

Night One: Zwolle

The old centre is enclosed by a star-shaped moat, the Stadsgracht, with a flat, paved path along much of it. A short stroll of about 1 km gives the best sense of the town. The Sassenpoort, a fifteenth-century gate on the moat, is a landmark you can see from outside. The Peperbus, the 75-metre tower of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwetoren, has steps, so skip the climb.

Museum de Fundatie, in a neoclassical building topped by a curved silver-grey extension, costs around €14 and has lifts. Check its opening days. The Grote Kerk in the centre is level inside.

Hotel Fidder, in the old town, is a short walk from the station. Van der Valk Hotel Zwolle is a larger hotel outside the centre with parking. Confirm lifts and breakfast times when you book.

The cafés around the Grote Markt and on Diezerstraat are the easiest places for a meal, and many serve a Dutch menu of stew or fish. Book ahead on a weekend.

Arrive in the late afternoon after the race if the legs allow, or take the first train on Monday morning and leave your luggage at the hotel on arrival. The walk from the station to the old centre passes through the Stationsstraat area and crosses the moat, a level route of about 800 metres. Zwolle's Monday market and shopping streets are open as usual, and the pedestrian Diezerstraat has benches every few hundred metres.

For a gentle second activity, the path around the moat is the easiest, and a canal-side cafe stop at the Thorbeckegracht gives a view of the water. The Grote Kerk, with its pulpit by Adam Straes van Weilborch, is free or low-cost to enter; check the opening hours. On a dry afternoon, the Park de Wezenlanden along the moat has flat paths and benches.

Zwolle is a small town, so one night is enough, and trains on towards Amsterdam leave every 15 to 30 minutes. If you have a late flight, spend the extra hours at the Fundatie rather than carrying luggage onto the train. Check the last service if you plan dinner late.

Getting to Schiphol Airport (AMS)

Zwolle to Schiphol takes about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half, usually with a change at Amsterdam. Check the NS planner. The airport station is under Schiphol Plaza, with lifts to the terminal.
