The Florianópolis Marathon starts and finishes beside the north waterfront, and the island has a quieter side on its western shore. Santo Antônio de Lisboa is a village settled by Azorean families in the 18th century, and it still has the low houses and the small church that go with that history.
August in Florianópolis: Winter. Days usually run cool and often grey, with highs around 20°C and lows around 14°C, and rain can arrive in any week. Bring a light waterproof for the walk and plan the visit for the middle of the day, when the air is warmest.
Ask your hotel about the current bus from the central terminal, or agree a taxi fare with a set return time. Weekday and weekend timetables differ, so check the schedule before leaving. The ride is short enough to fit into half a day.
The seafront walk
The main recovery-friendly walk is the road along the bay. The surface is paved and the gradient is flat, so it works for tired quads. The village is small, and the stretch from the church to the last restaurants takes a gentle half hour. Stop on the benches facing the water, where the bay is calm and the boats sit at their moorings.
Lunch
The seafront has a row of restaurants built around oysters from the local farms. Order a dozen as a starter and a fish dish after, and sit in the shade if the day is bright. Opening hours and menus change by season, and some kitchens close on weekday afternoons in winter, so check before you go if you have a place in mind. Prices vary, so treat any figure as a guide.
Getting back
Return by the same road. A late-lunch start leaves time to walk off the meal and still reach the centre before dark. Keep the evening free, since a marathon recovers best with an early night.
