The Graz Marathon runs in October, and the Monday after is the wrong day for most things in this part of Austria. The Landeszeughaus and the Kunsthaus are shut on Mondays, and the Stübing museum keeps the same pattern: it opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 16:00. Leave this trip for the Tuesday.
October in Stübing: the museum's season runs from April to the end of October, so a Tuesday in the second or third week of the month falls in its last few weeks. The valley is wooded, and the farmhouses are outdoors, so a dry day makes a difference. In the first half of October the days are often clear and mild, though the shade in a side valley can feel cool. Check the museum's current opening dates at museum-joanneum.at before travelling, because the season end is fixed to the calendar and not to the weather.
Getting there
The S1 regional line runs from Graz Hauptbahnhof towards Bruck an der Mur and stops at Kleinstübing, which is the starting point for the walk to the museum. The station is roughly 15 km north of the city. A single fare is a few euros; confirm the current fare and timetable at verbundlinie.at or oebb.at, since services are less frequent at weekends. From the station, follow the signs along the Mur on the Grazer Umland-Weg to the entrance. The route is flat beside the river, and the museum only allows entry through the main gate on the river side.
The museum
The Austrian Open-Air Museum sits in a roughly two-kilometre side valley of the Mur and holds around a hundred original farmhouses and outbuildings, moved here from across Austria. The range runs from a Burgenland mountain farmhouse to a Bregenzerwald alpine hut, so the walk is a tour of how Austrians built and lived by region. Each building is furnished to match its period.
Plan for a long, slow walk. The valley is a linear site, so you cover it as an out-and-back, and the distance adds up even at a runner's recovery pace. Take the buildings in order and stop at the benches. Check the museum website for accessibility notes before you arrive, as some of the older houses have steps and low doorways.
Entry for an adult was approximately €14.50 (£12.50) on a single-day ticket in the latest published price list; prices change, so use the figure as a guide only.
Eating
The historic Gasthaus Zum Göller stands inside the museum. It was moved here from the Lahnsattel at St. Ägyd and serves traditional dishes from across Austria. Eat there after the walk rather than before, and arrive before the late-afternoon quiet if you want a full menu. Check opening times on the museum website.
Getting back
Walk back along the Mur to Kleinstübing and take the S1 to Graz Hauptbahnhof. Allow time before the last admission and the 18:00 close, so you are not rushing the return walk on tired legs. Check the evening timetable for the last convenient train back to Graz.
