The Route: Guaratuba hotel (night 2) → Praia Central → Praça Coronel Alexandre da Silva Mafra → hotel → Curitiba → Airport (CWB) Logistics: No change of hotel. Short taxi rides within town, then a road transfer or coach to Curitiba on Tuesday. Marathon Month: March Duration: 1 night
Guaratuba hotel (night 2) ──(taxi)──> Praia Central ──(taxi)──> Praça Coronel Alexandre da Silva Mafra ──(taxi)──> hotel
Tuesday: hotel ──(road transfer or coach, 2 to 3 h)──> Curitiba ──> Airport (CWB)
Easter weekend is the worst time to travel in a hurry in this part of Brazil, and a good reason to stay put. The marathon ends on Sunday morning. Monday is a holiday-weekend exit day, with the roads and coaches that go with it. A second night costs a hotel room and buys a Tuesday departure.
March on the Paraná coast is warm and wet, with a monthly mean of 22 to 27°C and about 218 mm of rain on a 30-year climatology. Showers can arrive at any hour. Keep a light shell in your bag and plan the day around a dry spell.
The day after
Do the minimum. Eat a proper breakfast at your hotel, stretch gently and walk on flat ground only. Hotel Santa Paula and Kaakupê Praia Hotel are both on Avenida Visconde do Rio Branco, and Hotel VillaReal Charme is on Avenida Curitiba. Whichever you used for the race, ask for the second night when you book the first, since Easter rooms are in demand.
The afternoon
The municipal tourism office lists the Praia Central as an urban promenade with benches and kiosks. Take a taxi, walk a short stretch and sit. In the centre, Praça Coronel Alexandre da Silva Mafra on Avenida 29 de Abril has benches and lighting, and the Casarão do Porto and Casa da Cultura on Rua Coronel Afonso Botelho de Souza lists ordinary hours of 08:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 12:00 to 18:00 at weekends. Ring for holiday hours.
Do not plan to climb the Morro do Cristo. Access has been closed for works.
Where to eat
Restaurante Convés, at the Hotel VillaReal Caieiras on Avenida Atlântica 400, takes non-guests for lunch from 12:00 to 15:00 and dinner from 19:00 to 23:00. O Siri Cascudo on Avenida Curitiba lists weekend hours of 11:15 to 15:00. Ring ahead on Easter Monday.
Getting home
On Tuesday, travel to Curitiba by pre-booked road transfer or by a coach from the Guaratuba stop, which takes two to three hours. Afonso Pena airport (CWB) is in São José dos Pinhais, outside the city. Ask the coach operator for a timetable for your date, and leave several hours before an international flight.
