After the Neusiedler See Marathon: Eisenstadt
The Route: Illmitz → Eisenstadt → Vienna Airport (or onward to Vienna) Logistics: Roughly an hour by road. By public transport, expect a bus to Neusiedl am See and at least one further change. A pre-booked taxi or a hire car is simpler. Marathon Month: September Duration: 2 nights
Illmitz ──(about 1 hour by road)──> Eisenstadt ──(walk)──> Schloss Esterházy / old town
│
└──(train or road)──> Vienna / Vienna Airport
Eisenstadt is the capital of Burgenland and one of the smallest provincial capitals in Austria. It has a palace the size of a small city block and a composer who lived and worked here for decades, with vineyards on the ridge behind. After the race it offers a slower pace than Vienna: shorter distances, thinner crowds and a dinner that does not need a bus.
September in Eisenstadt: days are mild and the grape harvest is under way on the nearby slopes. Opening hours at the palace and museums vary with the season, and published listings differ. One national rail listing gave the palace's 2026 hours as daily 10:00 to 16:00 from May to September and Wednesday to Sunday in October, while the palace's own pages gave Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00, in September and October. Check the palace website before you plan your Monday, since Monday is the day most likely to be shut.
Getting there
Eisenstadt is about an hour from Illmitz by road. A pre-booked taxi or a hire car is the easiest way on the Monday after the race. By public transport, plan on a bus to Neusiedl am See and a further change, and check both the ÖBB journey planner and the regional bus timetable the evening before. Journey planners show different options, and the timetable on a Monday can differ from the weekend.
Nights one and two: Eisenstadt
The town is compact and flat enough for a tired runner. The Schloss Esterházy is the centrepiece: a large palace of the Esterházy family, who employed the composer Joseph Haydn here. Allow a couple of hours for the state rooms and the gardens. Entry prices change, so check the palace website. The gardens give you somewhere to sit when the stairs inside become hard work.
The Haydn connection runs through the town. The Haydn-Haus is the composer's former home, now a museum, and the Bergkirche holds his tomb. Hours for both vary by season. A gentle walk between the palace and these two sites takes you through the old town without any climbing worth mentioning.
On a clear afternoon, the slopes of the Leithaberg, the low ridge behind the town, are the local wine country. The area is hillier than Illmitz, so a taxi to a cellar is kinder to the legs than a walk.
Where to stay
Hotel Galántha is a hotel in Eisenstadt that appears in Burgenland tourism listings. Ask about breakfast hours and late checkout when you book. The Eisenstadt tourist office can suggest guesthouses in the old town if the hotel is full.
Where to eat
Eisenstadt has restaurants serving Burgenland dishes and local wine around the old town. Opening days vary by season and many close on a Monday or Tuesday, so telephone ahead and book for the evening. Ask the hotel which places are open on your nights.
Getting home
For Vienna, trains and buses run from Eisenstadt, and the journey planner at fahrplan.oebb.at will show current options. For the airport, plan on a change in Vienna and the 15-minute Railjet from Wien Hauptbahnhof, or take a taxi if you are travelling with luggage and a flight to catch. Allow extra time on a Sunday.
