The K42 drops you into Innsbruck more than 1,200 m below the high ground, down through the long middle stages and then up again to Höttinger Bild. By Friday the quadriceps have an opinion about every stair. Wattens asks very little of them. You sit on a shuttle, you walk on flat floors and you sleep in the same bed as the night before.
May in Innsbruck: the Innsbruck-Flugplatz normal for May is a mean daily maximum of 20.2°C and a minimum of 8.2°C, with 85.9 mm of rain across the month (1991 to 2020). A wet Friday suits this trip, because the main attraction is indoors.
Getting there
Swarovski Kristallwelten is at Kristallweltenstraße 1 in Wattens, east of Innsbruck. The operator runs a shuttle from Innsbruck main station with several departures a day. Wheelchair capacity is limited, and a seat is not guaranteed as part of your ticket, so check the current schedule on the operator's website and buy the shuttle and entry together if it allows.
The regional rail line also serves Fritzens-Wattens, one of four stations in the Hall-Wattens region. Check the ÖBB and VVT planners the evening before for the journey time, and use the shuttle unless the rail timetable suits you better.
The day
The attraction opens daily from 09:00 to 19:00, with last entry at 18:00. Go in the morning. Do the indoor exhibits first and take the outdoor areas only if the weather is dry and your legs feel willing. Eat on site or in Wattens, and check the opening times of any restaurant you choose.
Prices and ticket combinations change, so use the website figure and not an old one. Allow a few hours inside.
Where to stay
You return to Innsbruck for the night, so stay where you slept for the race. ibis Innsbruck at Sterzinger Straße 1 is by the main station, which saves a walk to the shuttle. Hotel Das Innsbruck at Innrain 3 is a city-centre alternative with luggage storage. Confirm availability and checkout times for your dates.
Getting home
Take the last comfortable shuttle back to the main station and check the time before you commit to a late lunch. From there, Innsbruck Airport is a bus F ride of about 20 minutes, which is worth knowing if you fly on Saturday.
