Douglas is the practical choice for anyone with three days and no wish to pack a bag twice. The ferry terminal, the bus station, the steam railway and the Manx Electric Railway all start or finish here. Pick a hotel on the promenade, unpack once, and let the island come to you.
August in Douglas is the main season. The Victorian horse trams run along the promenade in summer, the heritage railways are open, and the museums keep their longer hours. Check the 2027 timetables before booking, and book as soon as the marathon date is announced, because the town fills for other August events.
Night one: recovery
Your legs will want a flat walk and a lie-down. Douglas promenade is a long, gently curving sea front, about 3 km from end to end, and it is flat. Walk it slowly in the evening. The horse trams make a good alternative to walking and are an odd thing to ride, because the horses are real and the timetable depends on them.
Where to stay: The Ellan Vannin Hotel on Loch Promenade, At Caledonia on Queens Promenade and the Sefton Hotel on Harris Promenade all sit on the sea front. Ask about the lift and any parking before booking, since they differ.
Day two: Laxey and the mountain
Take the Manx Electric Railway to Laxey. The Great Laxey Wheel is open daily from 09:30 to 16:30 in the 2026 season, with last entry at 16:00. Add the Snaefell Mountain Railway if the weather is clear. Be back in Douglas by early evening.
Day three: Peel or the south
Choose one. Peel is a bus ride across the island and has the castle on St Patrick's Isle and the harbour smokehouse. The steam railway to Port Erin takes about an hour and runs close to Castletown, where Castle Rushen is open daily from 09:30 to 16:30 in the 2026 season. Both involve steps, so choose the one that suits your legs.
The last day
Keep the final morning light. The Manx Museum in Douglas covers the island's history and is a calm indoor option. The Tower of Refuge, a small castellated lighthouse on a rock in the bay, is worth a look from the shore.
Getting to Ronaldsway Airport (IOM)
Ronaldsway is on the south side of the island, near Castletown. From Douglas, take the airport bus or a taxi. Allow enough time before check-in, particularly on a Sunday or a holiday weekend, when services are less frequent. Check the schedule when you arrive.
