Peel is the Isle of Man's west-coast town, and it faces the sunset. After a Sunday of running two laps round the north of the island, the pleasure of arriving somewhere with a long, flat promenade is hard to overstate. Nothing in the town is more than a short walk from anything else.
August in Peel is mild and lit until late. The castle, the museum and the harbour are all in season. Peel Castle is open from 11:00 to 16:30 in the 2026 season, so check the 2027 hours, and book the night as soon as the marathon date is confirmed.
Night one: Peel
The castle stands on St Patrick's Isle, linked to the mainland by a causeway beside the harbour. The walls are red sandstone, weathered to the colour of old brick, and the ruins inside date from the Viking age to the Middle Ages. Walk the perimeter slowly. The paths are mostly level, with a few steps, and the wind off the Irish Sea is the real obstacle.
The harbour is a working one. Small boats unload shellfish and fish at the quay, and gulls watch the process with interest. Peel is known for kippers, and Moore's Traditional Smoke House on the waterfront has smoked them for generations. A visit is short and gives you something to take home, if your luggage and your airline allow it.
The beach west of the harbour is wide and sandy, and the water is cold. A paddle in the shallows is as much cold-water therapy as most legs need after a marathon. The headland of Peel Hill rises at the end of the bay. The climb is short, but it is a climb, so leave it to the second day or skip it.
Where to stay: Pick a room within a short walk of the castle causeway, on or near the promenade or the Strand. Peel is small enough that anywhere central keeps the harbour, the beach and dinner within a few minutes on foot. Check the exact address on a map before you pay.
Where to eat: Fish and chips, local scallops and queenies (the Manx small scallop) are the dishes to look for when they are in season. Ask at the harbour what has come in that week.
The next morning
Walk the harbour again before you leave. Peel has a heritage centre, the House of Manannan, which covers the island's Celtic and Norse history, and it is a good use of a wet morning if you have time and a ticket. Check opening times first.
Getting to Ronaldsway Airport (IOM)
Ronaldsway is in the south of the island, near Castletown. From Peel, take a bus to Douglas and change for the airport, or take a taxi. Allow a generous margin for the connection, because the island's buses are not frequent enough to make a tight one safe. If you are flying home the same day, leave Peel by mid-morning.
