A short crossing of the River Medina to East Cowes opens up one of the island's strongest history stops: Osborne House, Queen Victoria's former seaside retreat. October at Osborne House: check opening days in advance, as some properties reduce hours outside peak season.

Osborne House

Osborne House, built as Queen Victoria's private residence and where she died in 1901, is set in extensive grounds overlooking the Solent, with state rooms open to visitors and grounds suited to gentle walking. This is a largely low-effort visit, well suited to legs recovering from an undulating marathon the day before.

Where to eat: East Cowes has a smaller selection of cafés than Cowes itself, with Osborne House's own on-site café a practical option during a visit.

The return crossing to Cowes retraces the same short foot-passenger ferry route across the Medina.
