After the Isle of Wight Marathon: West Wight Extension

The Route: Cowes → Yarmouth and west Wight Logistics: By car or bus; west Wight is less immediately connected to Cowes than the island's central and eastern towns. Marathon Month: October Duration: 2 nights

Cowes ──(car/bus)──> Yarmouth / west Wight

West Wight offers the island's most dramatic scenery, a genuine step up from the marathon's own Cowes base for runners with two extra nights to spend. October in west Wight: quieter than summer, with the chalk headlands and coastal paths at their most atmospheric under autumn light.

Yarmouth and the Needles

Yarmouth, a small harbour town on the island's western tip, makes a good base for exploring west Wight, including the Needles headland and its chalk stacks rising from the sea. Coastal paths here range from short, flat strolls to longer clifftop walks, with the shorter options better suited to legs still recovering from the marathon.

Where to stay: Yarmouth has a small selection of guesthouses and inns around its harbour, worth booking ahead given limited supply.

Where to eat: Yarmouth's harbourside has a handful of pubs and cafés, the practical dining base for this part of the island.

Getting Back

The return journey to Cowes by car or bus retraces the island's main road, with ferry connections back to the mainland available from Cowes or East Cowes.
