The east of the island is a different place from the west. The marathon takes you through the north-west plateau and the south-west corner. Gorey sits on the other side, on a bay that faces France, and the main thing here is a castle.
October in Gorey is the end of the season. Mont Orgueil is open daily from 10:00 to 17:30 until 24 October in the 2026 season, with last entry an hour before closing, so the 2027 closing date matters: a race on 3 October leaves only three weeks of margin. Check the Jersey Heritage page before you plan around it.
Night one: Gorey
Bus services 1, 1a, 2 and 13 link St Helier with the Gorey area, according to the castle's operator, and the journey time depends on the route. Leave yourself a margin. A Monday after a Sunday marathon is not a day for a tight connection.
Start at harbour level. The harbour is small and mostly flat, and the castle rises directly above it. Walk the front, find a café, and look up. Mont Orgueil is a medieval fortress on a rocky headland, and the way up is by stairs and uneven stone. Enter only if the legs agree, and take the upper levels slowly. The view back across the bay is the reward.
If your quads say no, do the harbour and the castle's lower sections and leave the rest.
Where to stay: Look for a room within a few minutes of the harbour and check the address on a map before you pay. A flexible cancellation term is worth a few pounds.
Where to eat: The harbour has several restaurants and cafés with seafood on the menu. Ask where you stay what is local that week, and book dinner.
The next morning
Take a slow walk along the front before you leave. Return to St Helier for your luggage, or go straight to the airport if you flew in with a small bag.
Getting to Jersey Airport (JER)
Jersey Airport is on the south-west of the island, across from Gorey, so the transfer means going back through St Helier or taking a taxi. Check the bus timetable and allow a generous margin, because a missed connection on a small island is not a short delay. If you fly home on Tuesday morning, leave Gorey the evening before or order a taxi.
