After the João Pessoa International Marathon: The Historic Centre
The Route: João Pessoa beach hotel → Historic centre → João Pessoa beach hotel → Airport Logistics: One extra night in the hotel you already have. The city tour collects from partner hotels and runs Tuesday to Sunday. Fares and times vary, so check them before you book. Marathon Month: August Duration: 1 night
Beach hotel ──(city tour, hotel pickup)──> Historic centre / São Francisco ──> Beach hotel ──(taxi)──> Airport (JPA)
The marathon starts and finishes on the Cabo Branco bluff, close to the beaches, and the old town is a short drive inland and away from the sea. A Sunday marathon leaves a calendar problem: the main historic attraction is shut on Mondays. The answer is to keep the same room, do nothing on Monday and go on Tuesday.
August in João Pessoa is wet, with around 200 mm of rain in the month on long-term city normals and highs near 28°C. A morning of dry cloud suits a city visit better than a bright afternoon, and a light shell fits in a small bag.
Monday: rest
Stay at the hotel. If you want to move, the beach avenues in front of the hotels are at the foot of the bluff, so the ground along the waterfront is the flattest you will find. Keep it to a short walk.
Tuesday: the centre
The Centro Cultural São Francisco is on Ladeira São Francisco, and ladeira means slope, so ask the tour about the walking route before you commit. The operator's visitor information, revised in September 2026, gives Tuesday 09:30 to 17:00, Wednesday to Saturday 09:00 to 17:00 with a break from 12:30 to 13:30, Sunday 09:00 to 15:00 and closed on Mondays. Full admission was R$24, and in-person ticket sales stop 30 minutes before closing. Some areas were under restoration. Confirm the hours and prices at centroculturalsaofrancisco.org.br, because they change.
Luck Receptivo runs a city tour that includes partner-hotel transport, covers the centre and treats São Francisco admission as an extra. It operates Tuesday to Sunday. The tour is the easy way to cover the architecture on a car-first itinerary. The Hotel Globo area is on the municipal tourism list of sights, and interiors may not be open, so enjoy the outsides and do not plan around going in. A tour stop does not guarantee entry.
Standing and walking on cobbled or sloping streets is the hard part. Ask about steps and benches, wear shoes with grip and cut the visit short if your quads complain.
Where to stay
Keep your race-weekend hotel and ask for the extra night in advance. Hplus Beach João Pessoa (Avenida Cabo Branco 1984) offered a discount to marathon runners for a recent edition. Verdegreen (Avenida João Maurício 255, Manaíra) is a base for a longer stay with restaurants close by. Room extension and luggage storage are not guaranteed, so ask when you book.
Where to eat
Mangai (Avenida General Edson Ramalho 696, Manaíra) is on the city's tourism list and takes reservations through its social page. NAU Frutos do Mar (Rua Lupércio Branco 130, Manaíra) is a seafood restaurant with its own booking page. Ring for Tuesday opening times, since menus and hours change.
Getting to the airport
João Pessoa's Presidente Castro Pinto Airport (JPA) is in Bayeux. The airport operator lists a 24-hour taxi service at the terminal and a pickup point for app cars. An airport bus runs on weekdays and Saturdays with limited departures, so a taxi is the safer plan for a morning flight. Agree the fare before you set off.
